Occupational Therapy FAQs
Answering our most frequently asked questions
-
Will I Need a Referral for Your OT Services? No referral from a GP is required. Simply complete our referral form to get started.
-
What Should I Expect During the Initial OT Assessment? The Initial Assessment typically lasts about 2 hours. During this time, we’ll gather information about your child’s developmental history, interests, strengths, and areas where they may need support. We’ll send you a link to complete a functional assessment. If appropriate, we can also discuss sensory assessments to be conducted at a later date. Together, we’ll collaborate to set meaningful goals and schedule regular therapy sessions. We look forward to meeting your little one!
-
What Type of Activities are Used in OT Therapy Sessions? We use a variety of play-based and functional activities designed to support and improve specific skills. This may include fine motor games, obstacle courses, sensory exploration, and worksheets. Each session is uniquely tailored to your child’s individual needs and interests, so no two sessions are exactly the same.
-
Do Parents/Caregivers Participate in OT Sessions?Yes! We encourage parents and caregivers to be actively involved in therapy sessions whenever possible. Your participation helps reinforce the skills your child is learning, and we highly recommend continuing the strategies between sessions to support your child’s development. After each session, we’ll send detailed notes outlining what was discussed, the interventions and strategies used, your child’s participation, and the plan for moving forward.
-
How do I Access NDIS Funding For Your OT Services? If your child is aged 6 years or under and requires early intervention support, they may be eligible for NDIS funding if they have challenges in at least two areas of development. A formal diagnosis is not required for children under 6 to meet eligibility criteria. After the age of 6, your child must meet specific criteria to continue receiving NDIS support. To access Early Childhood Intervention, you can contact the trained staff at Link Health and Community by calling 1800 546 532. Alternatively, you may complete the referral form linked below and email it to: ecei.link.lchs@ndis.gov.au

How Long is Your Waitlist?Unfortunately, we are currently at full capacity. Occasionally, and where time permits, we may be able to offer one-off assessments. We understand that waiting for services can be challenging, and we sincerely apologise for not being able to provide a specific timeframe for when your child will be seen. We want to assure you that we are doing our best to see families as soon as possible. Waitlist movement depends on various factors such as clients achieving their goals and being discharged, changes in NDIS eligibility, families relocating, or children no longer requiring support. Please be assured that we will contact you as soon as a place becomes available.
“Kids do well if they can.
If they can’t, we need to figure out why, so we can help.”
